On the night before my birthday, to celebrate, Ms. P took A-kun and me to Apollonia, a Greek Bistro in Costa Verde Center in University City, San Diego. Ms. P is an old friend of A-kun's.
I love Greek food and Apollonia serves decent Greek dishes. I have eaten there a number of times before, even back when the restaurant was called Aesop's Tables.
We shared an appetizer, mezedakia, which included spanakopita, bourekia, tzatziki, taramosalata, marinated artichokes, yalandji, feta cheese, and kalamata olives. The mezedakia was served with warm pita bread.
I got a lamb kebab dinner, and A-kun and Ms. P had gyros sandwiches for their main dishes.
The lamb came skewered with red pepper, mushroom, zucchini, and onion, and was served with rice pilaf and briami. The lamb had been very well-marinated, and was consequently very juicy and tender. The minty tzatziki sauce complemented the meat quite favorably by moderating the lamb's natural oiliness. It was so good, I was able to complete the entire dish!
I did not save any room for dessert. However, since it was my birthday dinner, Ms. P ordered a dessert for the three of us to share: crepe mavrodaphne. The crepe had just the right amount of sweetness; I was able to have a couple of bites.
